Vote for your lockdown heroes 🏆 + Oktoberfest + free cinema pizza

Friday 16 October 2020  Camdenist presents your curated selection of ideas, events, culture and good reads

   Nominate your local heroes

It's been a year like no other, but amongst all the challenges and bad news, we've also all heard stories of amazing selflessness and brilliant neighbourliness. We feel these people should be honoured, so have launched Camden Covid Champions, a chance for you to thank your heroes of lockdown and beyond. Nominate any individual, group or business you'd like to see awarded for their outstanding community service.

. You'll also have the chance to win exclusive discounts and prizes including a King's Cross staycation for two with dinner and cocktails at the Great Northern Hotel.

A lesson in beating the cold

The nights sure are drawing in fast, so why not take some inspiration on how to survive the cold, dark winter months from the people who do it best? Opening at the British Museum next week, Arctic culture and climate celebrates the ingenuity and resilience of those living in the world's most northerly region. It's the UK's first major exploration of Arctic inhabitants throughout history, bringing together loads of fascinating artefacts whilst addressing the question of how these resourceful people respond to dramatic changes in seasonal weather and the extremes of climate change.

 Halloween's hot ticket

If you thought Halloween was pretty much cancelled this year and the curfew had seen off any potential fun when the clock strikes twelve, think again. Camden Town's

 Pirate Castle

have come up with the ingenious idea of hosting a unique

for adventurous adults on the Regent's Canal, from 11pm - 1am on Saturday 31 October. All proceeds from the spooky shenanigans will support their awesome community watersports charity, so there’s every reason to treat yourself to a night to truly remember.

 Free pizza at the flicks

It's been an historic 100 years since the

Everyman Cinema

first opened its doors in Hampstead. They've since grown into a real force to be reckoned with in cinema, adding new branches and pioneering luxe ideas like table service and sofas. True to form, they're spreading the birthday love by gifting loyal customers a

at every screening booked from Monday to Wednesday throughout October. The offer is on at all three of their beautiful local venues, including for Sofia Coppola's feel-good film On The Rocks at Belsize Park, the deadly Saint Maud at King's Cross, and the hotly anticipated Rebecca re-make at Hampstead.

 Beery Bavarian Ballroom

Let your (socially distanced) hair down this weekend at the annual Camden Oktoberfest, hosted in our borough's original house of fun, the Electric Ballroom. They're going all out tomorrow with an entire afternoon and evening of safety compliant revelry - complete with traditional beer tables, all manner of German sausage, and live music from a modern-day brass band and DJ legends, Club De Fromage. Dancers and games will keep the drinkers entertained and fancy dress is highly encouraged, so round up your household and dust of those lederhosen.

  • Joe's Bar makes a welcome return to Chalk Farm on Sunday night, kicking off with a good old-fashioned pub quiz. Rally your bubble and book yourselves a socially distanced table.

  • Piled on the pounds during the (first) lockdown? Bloomsbury's Brunswick Centre will be hosting the Brunswick Fit Club tomorrow, offering a complimentary workout with 'personal trainer to the stars', Josiah Hunte, plus a free goodie bag to take home.

  • Black History Month continues with a raft of events organised through Regent's Place, including online talks, a virtual operatic performance and screen printing demonstrations that you can follow from home.

  • The ever-impressive King's Cross music festival Cubitt Sessions is moving online, presenting virtual screenings of pre-recorded performances captured in a variety of settings, spanning folk music in the Brecon Beacons to Flamenco dance in Spain.

  • It’s International Repair Day tomorrow, so in the spirit of ‘waste not, want not’, Transition Kentish Town will be hosting a virtual repair cafe with the help of The Restart Project. Set up by a group of Camden residents, they’ll teach you how to repair broken electronics and rethink your consumption habits.

  • Superheroes of the sandwich world, Sons + Daughters are celebrating their first birthday in King's Cross with a special deal - swing by any time this month to pick up a thrillingly large sandwich plus a cocktail for just £11.

  • Calling all budding photographers, The City of London are setting a half term challenge for children and young people to get out and about with their cameras and capture their best autumnal shots of Hampstead Heath.

  • Camden People's Theatre are getting creative with the lockdown entertainment, presenting new interactive theatre piece The House Never Wins, where you gamble cash for the fate of the planet. Play along from the comfort of your sofa on Wednesday (21st) and simply pay what you can afford, but the chance to win a cash prize is real.

  • Aspirational artists should treat themselves to a workshop at the Hampstead School of Art in this half term course for adults. Browse their programme for lessons in still life, sculpture, and painting to music.

  • Join an online discussion with Noreena Hertz on her aptly titled new book 'The Lonely Century - Coming Together in a World that's Pulling Apart' - hosted by the Primrose Hill Community Association this Wednesday (21st).

  • The story of lockdown love that blossomed between two injured swans on Hampstead Heath earlier this year captured the hearts of many during a difficult time. Now their story has been turned into a beautifully illustrated book, with proceeds going towards the swan rescue team.

Camdenist is collaborative and transparent by design. We want all locals to participate, so we've built a form where you can send us ideas, propose features, even contribute your own work. What should be in next week's email?
