Chalk Farm's new live music venue 🎹 + a local taproom opens 🍺
Your Friday morning essential read. Five local feel-good highlights, including exclusive special offers and events. Prepared with love by the team at Camdenist
MUSIC: A brand new music venue in the old Belgo
The renaissance of Chalk Farm Rd continues apace, with the former site of defunct moules, frites and bieres joint Belgo reopening at the heart of the main strip as a live music venue later this month. The Camden Club is the new venture, brought to you by Andrew Hart, who had a long history in central London venues before going on to found Bite Me Burger, next to the Roundhouse. With that site now up for redevelopment into a hotel, he's upped sticks across the road, and is currently transforming the one-time Belgian-themed restaurant into a 140-capacity gig space. We had hoped to get you the first photos of the stage and bar, plus news of the launch line-up today, but the opening date has been pushed back a touch, so watch this space for more news, coming imminently...
OUT NOW: THE NIGHT
The latest free print magazine in the Camdenist Presents... series is being distributed to over 100 venues across the borough and beyond over the coming days. It's our much-promised celebration of the people and places that operate from 6pm to 6am, from huge music venues to local cornershop staff. Grab a copy today and do let us know what you think: [email protected]
READ: Camden's graffiti champions speak out
After dark is when the city's graffiti artists come alive, bombing trains, spraying bridges and leaving a riot of colour for when dawn rises. In this feature from print magazine Camdenist Presents...The Night, we speak to Finn Brewster, founder of Camden Open Air Gallery, which was established to turn the borough's bland shutters into canvases and has morphed into a permanent local gallery space. We also hear from artists PiC and Ollie Sylvester about the beauty and attraction of creating subversive urban art.
DRINK: Werewolf taproom opening weekend
Exciting times for beer lovers, as Werewolf Brewery is finally opening its taproom under the railway arches at Randolph Street, near Camden Rd Overground station. Drop in anytime from midday tomorrow for the grand opening (including food by Yeah Burger), then return for the 'hungover cartoon day' on Sunday. Owner Rich told us all about his plans to brew craft American-style beers in Camden in this recent interview.
DANCE: Unbroken, London International Mime Festival
Next Tuesday and Wednesday at Euston's The Place, physical theatre artist Nikki Rummer combines acrobatics, gymnastics and capoeira to tell a very personal story with universal resonance.
One bittersweet Christmas, three generations of the Rummer family are summoned home for one last gathering. Told through the eyes of a daughter, Unbroken is a one-woman show that pieces together fragments of memories and buried secrets.
STAGE: An evening with Mum Poet Club
Book The Babysitter: An Evening with Mum Poet Club takes over the lovely downstairs at Soho Theatre this Monday night, for a life-affirming, raucous and cathartic evening of poetry in celebration of 'the magic and the mayhem' of raising kids. Born from the lockdown, this group of parents doing poetry includes award-winning performers and talented newcomers among their ranks, and all will be evoking (and likely provoking) tears, laughter and solidarity on the trials of modern family life.
THIS WEEK'S ONE-CLICK POLL With petrol prices 'soaring', what's your current attitude to driving a car?
LAST WEEK WE ASKED:
A majority of you are perfectly happy with a posh pint and a full gastro menu when you visit your local, although inevitably a large chunk also lament what is lost in the process. Hardly anyone feels 'a pint is a pint', so the pub setting is clearly of utmost importance. Luckily, despite the trends toward closures, we've got some truly great boozers across the spectrum throughout LB Camden. See you at the bar...
