8 new restaurants to try that just opened locally
Five weekly feel-good highlights, including exclusive offers, great reads, videos and things to do locally as we ease into 'unlockdown'. Prepared with love by the team at Camdenist
EAT: Loads of tasty newcomers
The first phase of
unlockdown
has seen diners encouragingly packing alfresco tables all week. It also ushers in a glut of long-frustrated new openings, as failed venues are reborn by fresh operators, and completely new places are finally allowed to open their (out)doors.
In Belsize Square, long-running pizza joint Papa Dels has become Cinder, specilaising in dishes cooked over fire on a Josper grill. It's been open for takeaway, but is now serving diners for the first time at the 'streatery' tables out front.
Previewed in the Weekly C-Mail a few months back, Camden Market's hot new gastro pub The Farrier finally opened this week for modern rustic comfort food, big Sunday roasts, and natural wines, all in a Grade II-listed setting.
Directly across the cobbles, Middle Eastern home delivery heroes Keff (pictured above) are moving into a bricks and mortar outlet for the first time any day now, too.
Just outside the Stables, recent Chalk Farm Rd arrival Heroica Live will soon be adding the live music element to complement their Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas, on the site of the former Hygge Pygge café.
Despite closing their King's Cross back alley branch last year, MEATLiquor have opened a new spot in nearby Bloomsbury, now serving decadent burgers every day on a large heated terrace at the Brunswick Centre.
Nearby on Judd Street, Nonos is a new all-day Greek restaurant and cocktail bar currently offering delivery of all the Hellenic classics.
Camden Garden Centre's in-house veg and vegan cafe Pritchard and Ure have converted some disused land into a fetching elevated terrace with views across the racks of spring blooms.
And just arrived in Kentish Town from St Albans is The Rabbit Hole, serving pub faves on the sun-trap high street terrace and stiff drinks imminently in the basement bar, all in the building formerly known as Neighbour & Jukes Bar.

SHOP: The Good Karma Store
Is this a hopeful vision for the future of our high streets? The Hampstead store vacated by multinational clothing behemoth
Gap
has been filled by a new project that restores preloved furniture, promotes circular fashion and supports vulnerable families in the UK and India. The compassion-focused charity Go Dharmic is behind The Good Karma Store, where guilt-free shopping is guaranteed.
for some retail inspiration.
LEARN: Analogue photography at Darkroom
Another retro-futurist local project is
, which teaches traditional film-based photography skills, from shooting on SLR cameras to experimental chemical and paper printmaking. They're back after lockdown with a new series of Covid-safe courses that are inevitably selling out fast. Based in workshops under the Burmarsh estate just north of Chalk Farm, they are reviving Camden's spirit of live/work housing schemes as well as the hands-on creativity of black & white and colour film.
Are you a local business or group that wants your re-opening message to be delivered through the door of every single one of Camden's 270,000 residents?Camdenist presents Unlockdown is the forthcoming print guide that's here to help.
ART: Painting the town
Kentish Town Rd has been hit by a collective who take the term 'street art' quite literally. Tactical Urbanistas were invited by the Council, believe it or not, to daub the pavement with a rainbow of colourful art early on Sunday morning. The idea is to celebrate the shops being able to return to being open, while promoting social distancing and play. Read more about this all-female collective who have been cheering up and empowering Londoners with their art.
THIS WEEK'S ONE-CLICK POLL The high street bank is fast becoming extinct, as West Hampstead becomes the latest Camden neighbourhood to lose its final branch this summer. What’s your opinion on this?
LAST WEEK WE ASKED:
What do you think of us introducing the Camdenist X artist t-shirt series?
Nearly half of respondents would consider buying a limited edition t-shirt as we continue to profile local artists (in fact, an impressive number of you already have bought the first one). Still, 32% think we'd be better of sticking to the day job. To those people, we simply say just wait and see...
