A festival for the new Northern Line + a street art shop

Your Friday morning essential read. Five local feel-good highlights, including exclusive special offers and events. Prepared with love by the team at Camdenist

SHOP: Street art finds a home on the high street

Camden Open Air Gallery

's first indoor exhibition and store has just opened in a prime spot on the busiest part of Camden High Street.

Camdemonium

includes vibrant artwork by street artists Xander Coy, Pic and Ollie Sylvester.

project was founded by local Finn Brewster (his mum ran the dearly missed Camden Brasserie just down the road) who wanted to bring some colour to the dreary shutters that punctuate the street. His idea was to help reimagine the area as we emerge from the lockdowns with a vibrant new focus.

Most of the shutters have now been painted with striking designs, with plans to expand along Chalk Farm Road

and beyond, too.

 FUN: Party across London's pond

We love championing local street parties and festivals but today we're encouraging you to cross the river. To celebrate the historic opening of the new Battersea Power Station Station (no that's not a typo), now a mere 22-minute tube ride from Camden Town, the fast-growing neighbourhood is hosting their own street party all this weekend. With live art and music performances (including a transport-themed mash-up from Battersea Power Station Community Choir), street food, film screenings and lots of family activities. Enjoy a lobster roll from BOB's Lobster, alcoholic sparkling water from Bodega Bay and soft serve ice cream made from nuts by DÁPPA to name a few. Look out for oysters for £1 and a bubble show from Bubble Inc.

POSTPONED: Due to unforeseen circumstances A Taste of Buck Street Market, due to be held this weekend, has unfortunately had to be postponed. All advance ticket holders will receive an automatic refund. We look forward to announcing a new date for the event in the near future.

 MUSIC: Local rapper AWATE speaks

"Music is universal. It gives you somewhere to experience the tapestry of the universe with others." As part of the ongoing series on Music in Camden, Camdenist speaks to local rapper AWATE about growing up on Maiden Lane Estate, the influence Camden and its history has had on his sound, and how his experiences of synaesthesia have impacted his life and work.

 EXPLORE: A real urban jungle

This weekend a jungle will be taking over the West Handyside Canopy at King's Cross. Get delightfully lost in Green Rooms Botanical Market and find plant accessories, pots and terrariums, as well as locally sourced food and botanical health products. Biophilic design expert Oliver Heath will be giving talks and design critic Barbara Chandler has curated 'Green Grads', an exhibition of 30 design graduates eco ideas for the future.

 DISCUSS: Parenting and the workplace

As part of Regent's Place and Camden Giving's popular free Giving Insights series, our very own Partnerships Director, Max Christodoulou, will be talking on this month's edition. The topic is 'The Struggle of the Juggle': Max's personal experience of the challenges faced by parents in the workplace - and how to overcome them. Tune in to the online stream from 1-2pm on Wednesday (29th September) for what promises to be an insightful session.

THIS WEEK'S ONE-CLICK POLL Ahead of Giving Insights (see above), as more of us head ‘back into work’ after up to 18-months at home, do you think there will be lasting improvements in work/life balance for all?

LAST WEEK WE ASKED:

What has COVID done for your understanding of nature?

Our closest poll result yet. Hundreds of you voted, yet opinions remain very evenly spread when it comes to chaos and order theories, and what the arrival of a novel Coronavirus may have taught us. From the chaos, order emerges - certainly in this particular poll...
